I have horrible acne. I am going to DERMETOLOGIST. What exactly will they do at my appointment??
Question: So I have this horrible acne all over my face and Im only 14...
I have an appointment scheduled with the Dermetologist.
What will they do at this appointment?
Should I wear make-up to the app.?
Does the perscription they supply really work?
Answers: dont wear makeup
Yea, def. dont wear make-up, then they wouldnt be able to see what kind of acne you have. They just ask you all the stuff you have tried in the past, what you currently use, and junk like that. And yes, their stuff works. You just gotta give it time. Your acne wont be gone overnight.
Simple external exam. They might radiate your face with UV rays (well - controlled), they might give you prescription. My daughter had horrible acne until 2 things happened - 1. She began using Pro-Activ, and her stress level decreased greatly.
they will say it will go away over a course of time
They need to look at your skin, so don't wear make up (mascara is ok). Wash it and add moisturizer.
They will need to look at your skin closely. Don't be embarrassed - they don't judge you. Ask every type of question you can think of - no matter how embarrassing. Ask about popping zits. Ask about using stridex pads. Ask about topical (on the skin) and oral (pill) antibiotics. Ask about the birth control pill, which can help with acne sometimes.
Make a list of all the products you use or have used, even your regular soap. Make a list of the make-up you use. Make a list of medications you've used, even if they're not acne-related.
Remember: Tell them everything! If you lie because you're embarrassed, they can't give you the best help.
They will probably tell you to stop touching your face, which is harder than you think. They will probably tell you to cleanse, tone and moisturize. They will tell you to look for make-up and moisturizing products that are labeled non-comedogenic (which means it won't clog pores) and oil-free. They will tell you to exfoliate GENTLY with a washcloth.
Some prescriptions are harsh. Some are gentle. Some work on spots, some all over. Everything reacts differently for each person.
Do not let them kick you out without product recommendations or a prescription!
At the first appointment they will look at your skin and most likely give you an ointment to put on it.
I wouldn't recommend putting on make-up, but defiantly tell them that you do wear make up, and the brand and all of that stuff. Make a list of the different things you put on your face, and what you wash your face with.
They may tell you that you shouldn't wear make-up. That's what my doctor told me to do, but ask them if you can every other day of the week, or only during school hours.
Prescriptions work if you get the right one. Sometimes it takes another visit go get the perscriptions for you.
Good luck!
I had terrible acne as a teen.I went to the dermatologists .First he will try topical products and probably a internal pill.He will give u about 6 weeks before he sees u to see how that worked.I went thru all of this for years. My last resort was taking accutane. It was the miracle drug for me.The only problem is now a day it is only covered under the age of 25 by insurance, otherwise it runs about 250.00 for i think it was 30 pills. They dry your skin and mouth. What i did was at first a took a couple a week and got it to the point that i was only taking 1 tablet every 2 weeks. My skin smoothed so well it was a miracle.Another problem was if u r young they will take a pregnancy test to start. The pill is so strong it is the strongest form of vitamin a,it could harm the unborn fetus.I had no intentions on having anymore children so it was perfect for me.Just ask a lot of questions your dermatologist will answer them all.good luck to u.
I would agree not to apply make-up before your dermatologist appointment. The physican will want to examine your complexion closely so that perhaps the best choice(s) of medication can be prescribed. I did see on another thread that someone who took the very powerful accutane (an internal medication), ended up with Diabetes so perhaps that medication is used as a last resort. The derm may prescribe a topical cream such as differin or retin-a. Sometimes the dr may prescribe an tetracycline (sp?) antibiotic. Hoping that you find a product or products that help you!
P.S. I wonder if the dr would recommend a tca (medium depth) chemical peel of your face. I'm not sure if drs do those types of peels on teens and if they do them on those with severe acne. The chemical peel has a down time of about 7-10 days of staying indoors to stay out of the sun and due the face scabbing up and sloughing off. It might not be an option right now, but perhaps you can talk with the derm about it.
P.S.S. And please do Not try to pop your pimples as it can cause permanent scarring or infection :)
Don't wear make-up, they need to see your skin.
They will give you a visual check. Mine looked right at me and was like, OK - you have acne and rosacea. She gave me a prescription and at my one month check up, it was much better.
It depends on the stuff and how well you use it. I did not want an accutane type of medicine. I preferred the cream types. The first few weeks it does dry your face out (she gave me Differen) but it helped A LOT. Today I have my first cystic spot in three months - and that is because I have not been good about it lately and hormonal shifts .
Remember - you are 14. A lot of people are going through this right now so don't be to hard on your self. Go to the appointment with an open mind.
PS - always wear sunscreen too!!
I struggled with acne for years and I finally found the solution that works for me. We have been fooled, tricked, deceived, and just plain lied to. It's time that someone put a stop to it, and everyone learn the truth!
Those of us who suffer from acne have usually been given 2 choices and neither of them work:
1. Over the counter remedies such as cleansers, creams, ointments, etc. These things have been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.
2. Go see a doctor and or dermatologist. They will generally prescribe prescription drugs which include topicals and or antibiotics. This, too, has been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.
I found a step-by-step program that cured my acne and it has never come back. It is amazing and doesn’t use any drugs or doctors. The truth is that acne can be cured…if we know the secret the doctors and drug companies don’t want us to know.

that has all the details. I really suggest you check it out and see if it works as well for you as it did for me.
