Is a perm a good fit for me??

Question: I have very fine straight shoulder length hair. It is always limp and drags my face down (it is very long and skinny). I have to wash it everyday or it looks very oily and greasy. My friends who have curly or wavy hair wash theirs less often (dont know if that is the case with a perm too.) I have always wanted to try a perm and am wondering if this is a good idea. I will be in Africa for the summer and will not be able to wash my hair everyday (hopefully once a week though) or blow dry it. When my hair dries naturally it looks like one of those before pictures on the hair commercials :( I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a perm so it would look better and be a little easier to deal with. Plus I like the idea of a little variety and the possibility of volume. My family says no, but they hate curly hair in general and had bad run ins with the 80s perm . Is this a terrible idea? Is it incorrecct to think that with a perm I could just gel it and go?
Answers: Perming straight fine hair is something ALOT of people with your hair type do. It gives it alot more body and manageability. You don't want a small perm, get the largest one possible. Tell them you want loose waves, barely noticeable. They should use the sandy colored or orange rods. Make sure you're getting this done in a reputable salon, you may have to pay a little extra to ensure it looks good. Go to a stylist in person for a consultation, it is hard to tell you exactly yes or no without seeing your head of hair in person.

Something else that can give fine hair extra body and manageability is highlights, when done correctly. Also, I would take a good clarifying shampoo with you to Africa, like Shampoo 3 by Paul Mitchell to remove dirt and buildup that might hurt your hair from lack of washing and exposure to the elements. Also take a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that protects chemically treated hair. Ask your stylist for specific suggestions. Good luck!
yes
yes
just make sure u get a lite perm since your hair is so thin and striaght dont get one to strong
no i dont think its a good idea
with a perm you still esspecially have to brush your hair a lot but it will probably hide the greace but before u get a perm look at ur face shape and see if it will look good with your face
i loved my perms! my hair now holds perms for 3 years+ when i get one and it's only straight if blow dried and straightened. when my hair is straight i have to wash it every day too. a perm will dry it out some and it is soooo much easier to manage on trips especially those when you don't have all the luxuries of home. gel tends to weigh down the curls if they are especially new, but you can buy the John Frieda products for curly hair they have a anti-frizz spray that works wonders! when i used that i NEVER used gel or mousse. i think i perm would be good for your situation. and your family isn't the one who has to deal with your hair every day- epically on your trip to Africa! have a great trip!
no .. a perm would make you look like a poodle! Trust me .. I have fine/baby soft hair too and I tried a perm once .. A BIG mistake .. I was so depressed .. My hair looked horrible .. I paid to have it straightened and had to cut it real short form all the chemicals .. it dried my hair out :-(
I'd say no .. no to the perm .. Get it cut in layers and add some body to it .. Use a curling iron to give it some body .. Have fun with it and see what works for you!
it would be ok either way, but if you get a perm, make sure that your stylist does only a body perm, with very big rods, otherwise you will have an afor. As your hair does not have much weight to it, if you get a perm that is too tight, your hair will not have the weight to pull the curls down a little and make them not as poofy. A body perm is fairly low maintenance, all you really have to do is put a little gel or mousse in it, scruch it up, and let it dry naturally. But I must stress, than if you are someone who likes to change your hair often, or gets bored easily, don't do it. A perm on longer hair (shoulders, and longer) is at least a year long commitment, unless you are willing to cut it all off when you get bored with it.
The newer perms that are used in salons these days are not nearly as harsh as the ones use in the past. Products are being updated every day to make them as safe and least damaging as possible. And please don't do it yourself, I have so many horror stories about that!!!!
go ahead

change it

but hey

dont go on changing
i'd take you just the way you are

oh my gosh i had the same exact problem except i didn't go to africa but i camp as much as i can. the answer is yes, definitely! you will love it as long as you don't go cheap. and make sure they use rollers that are 1/2 around would be perfect for your length of hair. DO NOT let them use the old fashioned poodle hair rods!!! trust me on that- you're better off doing the perm yourself (which i did) than getting a poofy perm, you'd rather heve greasy flat limp hair than that. explore your options, the internet is a great place to read all about new perm techniques.
No. When perming ones hair, salons generally use a lot of chemicals which may look great but will later on damage your hair causing them to grow rough and sometimes even slightly fall out. Since your hair is already thin i would advise against the perm as you may be sacrificing what bounce you have. Stick to leave on conditioners availible in stores if you can not rinse your hair regularly. That should help your hair shine and also provide it vitamins that will give it bounce without over extending yourself to wash it out with water. If that does not seem to satisfy, then a hot new hair cut may do the trick. Who knows a sarong or white bush gear and an elfin look may just be what the docter ordered instead.
Do not do it. I have seen so many burnt out their hair because of perming-
I too suffer from limp, straight hair, and although I have a round face , the best style for this would be a cute bob cut w/ a possible perm.. if your stylist knows what he/ she is doing she will know how to stack it to give it more volume or leave it long and just perm it... that is the only way I can get away w/ not shampooing my hair everyday... GOOD LUCK
